Navigating the IEP & Section 504 Process: What Every Parent Needs to Know

Navigating the special education system can feel overwhelming, especially when parents are trying to determine what supports their child needs and what rights they have under the law. This workshop provides families with a clear, practical understanding of the differences between Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans while empowering parents with the knowledge and confidence to become effective advocates for their children.

Participants will gain an understanding of the evaluation process, legal timelines, eligibility requirements, school responsibilities, and strategies for working collaboratively with school teams. Learning objectives include:

  • Understand the differences between an IEP and a Section 504 Plan.
  • Identify when a child may benefit from an evaluation.
  • Learn how to formally request a school-based assessment.
  • Understand federal evaluation timelines under IDEA.
  • Recognize differences between public and private school obligations.
  • Understand eligibility requirements and parent rights.
  • Develop practical advocacy skills
