Reading Decoding vs. Reading Comprehension
Reading decoding is the skill used to “sound out” unfamiliar words to make meaning of letter-sound relationships. Decoding skills relies on early language skills called phonemic awareness and involves learning how sounds are linked to letters and letter combinations in the written language.
Reading comprehension, on the other hand, is the ability to comprehend or understand the meaning of text and make connections to the reader’s prior knowledge. There are many components to reading comprehension which include but are not limited to phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension.
