Equipping students with essential skills for college success

Beyond High School Course

Course Description

Beyond High School is a small group course designed to equip students with the essential skills for college success. This 2-Week Course covers a wide array of skills needed for college success such as time management, organization, study skills, test-taking strategies, note-taking, and self-advocacy skills, among others. Additional skills like goal-setting, financial planning, problem-solving, and decision-making are also honed.

Who is this for?

This course is ideal for 11th graders, 12th graders, and college students. It is particularly beneficial for teens and young adults who struggle to turn in assignments on time, experience high test-taking anxiety, have difficulty managing their time, lack independent study skills, and have difficulty navigating personal responsibilities in and out of school.

Small Group Format

This course is in a small group format to facilitate interaction and engagement. It will occur on-site at our Oakland learning clinic. Each lesson will include direct instruction, activities, gamification, discussion, and real-world applications.  Small group instruction provides an opportunity to learn alongside peers facing similar challenges and academic goals. It is also more affordable compared to individualized instruction.

Executive Functioning skills are critical for any student, especially for those transitioning to college life. Students who possess strong executive functioning skills are much better equipped to navigate the demands of higher education, handle the increased workload, manage stress, reduce school-related anxiety, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and succeed academically and beyond. Unfortunately, most high schools don’t teach these essential academic and life skills in an explicit and structured way that follows evidence-based coaching strategies.

Executive Functioning coaching involves partnering with students to develop lifelong strategies and skills needed to succeed in and outside of school. Think of it like the CEO of the brain, it is responsible for getting things done effectively!

“Our son has ADHD and other learning challenges and we have been thrilled by the progress he has made in his approaches to organization, schoolwork, and learning!”

Parent of 10th grader

“Our daughter’s experience at Strategies for Learning has been truly transformative.  She went from being a frustrated learner, not understanding why she couldn’t keep up with her classmates, to a thriving student and valued member of her school community.”

Todd, Father of High Schooler
