What is the Tests of Dyslexia (TOD)
The Tests of Dyslexia (TOD) is a comprehensive reading evaluation that helps families understand why an individual may be struggling—not only with reading, but with other learning challenges that often stem from underlying reading difficulties. Designed for individuals ages 5 and up, the TOD takes a close look at reading and the related skills commonly affected by dyslexia and other reading-based learning differences.
The TOD helps us identify both strengths and areas of need by examining:
- Clear indicators that show an individual’s risk for dyslexia
- Reading and spelling skills, along with essential building blocks for reading such as phonological awareness, memory, processing speed, vocabulary, and reasoning
- Input from parents, teachers, and students to create a well-rounded picture of how learning challenges show up at school and at home
- A comprehensive report with practical, targeted strategies to support learning in the classroom and beyond
The goal of the Tests of Dyslexia is to understand how your child learns. Rather than simply identifying challenges or assigning a learning disability diagnosis, the TOD provides clear insights and actionable next steps to guide individualized support.
Finding a Provider for the Tests of Dyslexia (TOD)
The Tests of Dyslexia (TOD) can only be administered by providers who meet strict qualification requirements set by the publisher, WPS. Ideally, the assessment is given by a dyslexia specialist with advanced training—such as a Master’s or Doctorate in a related field. This matters because the person conducting the evaluation isn’t just identifying dyslexia. They also understand how those learning differences affect day-to-day learning and how to design effective, individualized interventions to truly support your child.
Who Conducts the TOD at Strategies for Learning?
At Strategies for Learning, the TOD is conducted by Stephanie Broytman, our Director of Education who holds a Master’s degree in Learning Disabilities from Teachers College, Columbia University and is a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT). She brings extensive experience in special education and literacy intervention. A CALT is specially trained to:
- Identify dyslexia accurately
- Work closely with families to clarify priorities
- Help guide IEP and 504 goals
- Design and deliver individualized, structured language therapy
This means your child’s evaluation is thoughtful, thorough, and grounded in both expertise and real-world instructional experience.
