Julia Baker holds an Ed.D. in Reading and Literacy from Capella University, holds an M.S. in Literacy Studies from Lehman College, and holds an M.S. in Multicultural Education at College of Mount Saint Vincent. For the past 20 years, she has taught Language Arts and Social Studies as a special education teacher in both New York and Georgia.

Julia is a strong advocate for students with disabilities and diverse learners from different backgrounds. Her strength is being able to build an authentic connection with students by bringing about academic success through intrinsic motivation.  Julia has supported educators in a K-12 setting, with specialized instructional strategies for students with information processing issues.  In addition to collaborating with peers, she teaches small group language arts to students who are reading and writing below grade level. She occasionally tutors elementary school students remotely who receive extended school instruction in reading skills, reading comprehension, and writing.  Since the purpose of reading changes from elementary to secondary, her professional interest lies in discipline-specific literacy and how it supports struggling readers across the curriculum. Julia’s passion is modeling metacognitive strategies and demonstrating how to comprehend complex text.
