An interview with Maleek Mitchell, our talented Clinician from Tennessee.

Q: How do you motivate your students?

I like to get to know each student individually. I want to discover what they like, and what are their dislikes and use that to get to know who they are. I often will refer back to their interests in our work together and keep tabs on any changes in their interests. Developing rapport with your students is so important and when students know you care about them, they will be more willing to work with you and try things that may be challenging for them.

Q: If you could meet any fictional character, who would it be and why?

I would have to choose Captain America! I love his never-quit spirit! He is never daunted by any task and no matter how bad the situation may be he always gives a 110%.

Q. What is one book or movie you think every student should read or watch?

It would be the Lord of the Rings trilogy, either the book or movie series. It is a tale of persistence and going up against insurmountable odds. Even when they are forsaken, and lose their friends, they continue to pursue their shared goal.

Q: What are some EF strategies you use on a daily basis?

I like to make a list of things I need to accomplish for the day the night before and cross off items throughout the day as I get it done. Delayed gratification is an effective strategy for me This means sticking to a task until it’s done and rewarding myself for it. Some ways I like to “reward” myself include playing a short phone game, playing my guitar, or working on a music recording.

Q: You are self-quarantined for a week. What three items would you like to have with you?

It would have to be my bible, my guitar, and my cellphone!
